LA. .. . but noT the City of AngLes

Our separation from each other ‘s lives is only more greatly magnified as we inspect the callousness we, as Canadians, have to the needs of everyone living south of the U.S. There is no comprehension of what people’s common struggles are, how their current reality came to be, and what their aspirations are. Yet we do catch flashes of pain and necessity and at times we are inspired to help and do.

But what would we do differently and how would our lives change if we saw the direct connection with our lifestyle and their livelihood?? Our livelihood and their lifestyle??

As we work to help and improve the situation of others, we are ignorant to oppression, imperialism, and are blinded by stereotypes and misinformation.

The majority of our citizens see South America, the Caribbean, and Latin America as nothing more than a warm getaway, that’s inexpensive, exotic, and has some local poor. There is no sense of responsibility or regard for the deeply rooted poverty. We are not visibly held accountable by anyone, and we do not feel the guilt for their suffering and exploitation. Yet we try and provide relief and offer solutions. Yet we try and give people reasons for why they should give of their time and wealth.

Unbiased, objective reporting on Latin America will begin to draw people into the realization that not only do we have a role to play in the future of Latin America, we currently ‘are’ playing a role in Latin America that is intertwined in privatization, corruption, genocide, and exploitation. Reality is, that this is true. Awakening to this is unpleasant and highly undesirable, but as our world keeps shrinking to the size of one city all things will become more evident. As important as our connection with the earth we will be drawn to the mirror and will see our connection as living beings.

Our response to such a discovery will be dictated by our maturity, compassion, responsibility, and our will to live.

Unforgivingly, the misrepresentation of how we have, and are still trying to dominate over all the races in Latin America gives us a false sense of what our duty is, and how we may actually change for the better. We have minimal compassion, little understanding of what, and why.

The significance of true reporting on the dreams and the future of Latin America goes beyond the latest fashion trends, sports statistics, and space shuttle voyages.
We must demand the authentic representation of people’s voices from over 50 countries. We need to create a culture of understanding, connection, and hope. We so badly need to open our eyes, ears, and heart and begin to work towards living as an ideal global community filled with respect and dignity, equality and justice. We are moving towards a singular community, let it be one that will reflect all good learned from our history.
